Ascent Toward Salvation
구원을 향한 비상
This work visualizes the threshold at which human existence passes from restraint into freedom by placing a phoenix within a distinctly Korean form reminiscent of the traditional binyeo hairpin. The mother-of-pearl set into its body and wings reveals the refined delicacy of Korean craftsmanship while also suggesting the preciousness of essential human worth and the radiance of inner dignity.
The broken pin signifies the end of bondage, and the distant light points toward grace and salvation, as the phoenix comes to embody the freedom of a being finally able to rise toward the light.
This work visualizes a decisive moment of transition through a phoenix held within the form of a traditional Korean ornament: a passage from restraint into freedom, from bondage into grace. Long associated with nobility, auspiciousness, and spiritual dignity, the phoenix appears here not as a mere decorative motif or imaginary bird, but as a living symbol expanded into the realm of human existence and the soul.
Within the work, the phoenix still remains inside the structure of the ornament, yet the pin that once held it in place has already broken. What is depicted here is more essential than the act of flight itself: it is the threshold where captivity ends and freedom begins. The phoenix has not fully risen, yet it is no longer fixed as it once was. This suspended moment of tension and possibility forms the emotional and symbolic center of the piece.
The distant light that filters into the scene is not merely illumination; it is a calling presence, a direction that guides being itself, a path opened by grace, and a transcendent sign that makes ascent finally possible.
A particularly significant element in this work is the mother-of-pearl set into the body and wings of the phoenix, which deepens its distinctly Korean identity. In this work, the mother-of-pearl body and wings suggest the intrinsic worth and radiance of human existence itself — qualities that cannot be easily diminished or erased.
In Christian terms, this work does not present salvation as an abstract idea. Rather, it suggests that the moment one comes to know the saving presence, one is no longer confined within worldly restraint alone, but becomes free to rise toward the light. The broken pin signifies the end of bondage, while the distant light reveals the direction of grace.
At the same time, this work is an attempt to translate the beauty of Korea into a universal visual language. The restrained curves, the intricate metalwork, and the luminous surface of the inlaid shell do not foreground excess or spectacle, but instead reveal condensed dignity and quiet tension.
"The phoenix has not yet fully taken flight, yet it is already aligned with the direction of light. This is not an image of liberation completed, but of liberation beginning — its most essential and beautiful moment."
THE STORY · ATONEMENT · LENT
REFLECT ON HIM
그 이야기 · 속죄 · 사순절 · 묵상으로 주님을 바라보다
This work is a six-minute Christian cinematic film created for contemplation during the season of Lent, inviting viewers to follow the public ministry of Jesus Christ.
Beginning with His baptism in the Jordan River, the film traces a continuous narrative through nineteen key events from the Gospels: the wedding at Cana, the calling of the disciples, the feeding of the five thousand, Jesus walking on water, the raising of Lazarus, His entry into Jerusalem, the prayer in Gethsemane, the atoning sacrifice on the cross, the empty tomb, and the promise of the Ascension.
The origin of this work lies not in technology, but in a sincere longing not to let the season of Lent pass by without reflection. Over the course of approximately ten days, the artist devoted more than five hours each day to this process, carrying out the entire production — from concept and scenario to scene composition, scriptural examination, editing, and final output — personally and with sustained contemplation.
Each scene was created while returning to the Word, carefully discerning whether the unfolding narrative remained faithful to the essence of the Gospel. Although the film is produced entirely through artificial intelligence, AI here functions not as the purpose, but as a tool. The true essence of this work lies not in technological achievement, but in the time set apart and the traces of devotion offered to God.
In the exhibition space, viewers experience the work while wearing a headset. This is not merely for immersion, but an intentional gesture to quiet external noise and gather one's heart before God. Within these six minutes, viewers are invited to walk along the path of Jesus, passing through the cross and moving toward the hope of the resurrection in a quiet moment of contemplation.
"It is the artist's hope that this work may become a Lenten meditation for some, and for others, a gentle invitation to pause and return their hearts amid the busyness of life."
